Sam Houston State University (SHSU) has a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) whose primary responsibility is to the institution. The CEO of SHSU is President Dana G. Hoyt [1]. She is the 13th President of SHSU [2].
SHSU is a member of the Texas State University System (TSUS). The TSUS Rules and Regulations, Chapter 4, Section 2.1 states, “The President shall be answerable to the Board of Regents and shall have discretionary powers broad enough to effectively administer the University within the policies and guidelines as set forth by the Board of Regents” [3]. Chapter 4, Section 2.2 [4] of the TSUS Rules and Regulations further details the “Authority, Duties and Responsibilities” of the President to administer the University.
The SHSU Human Resources job description for President further stipulates the following [5]:
The President is the Chief Executive Officer of Sam Houston State University and is responsible for the development, maintenance and utilization of the university’s resources in such a manner that its goals, and objectives are achieved in the most effective and efficient manner, and in accordance with the desired philosophy as determined by the Board of Regents.
The President’s job description also sites eighteen primary responsibilities of the President. Primary responsibility number two states the following:
The President shall be answerable to the Board of Regents and shall have discretionary powers broad enough to effectively administer the University within the policies and guidelines as set forth by the Board of Regents. The President shall have such powers as may be from time to time delegated by the Board.
To effectively administrate the entire university, the President is the direct supervisor of the Vice Presidents and Athletic Director. SHSU has seven divisions: Academic Affairs, Finance and Operations, Enrollment Management, University Advancement, Student Affairs, Information Technology, and Athletics [6].
