  • I taught middle school English Language Arts and Reading for 13 years. I taught YA literature at the University of Houston Clear Lake as an adjunct before coming to SHSU.I have been elected chair of the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents of the National Council of Teachers of English and am the 2007 recipient of the ALAN Award for distinguished contribution to the field of YA literature.I have been elected to and served as a member of the Margaret Edwards Committee of the Young Adult Library Services Association of the American Library Association. I am also serving on the Odyssey Committee for 2008, a joint appointment from YALSA and the Association for Library Services to Children of ALA.I have been elcted to and served as chair of the Special Interest Group Network on Adolescent Literature of the International Reading Association.I have coordinated the Children's Choices and Teachers' Choices programs for the International Reading Association.
  • I have published two books in the field of literature for children and young adults. These books are being used as textbooks for courses in literature for children and young adults at many universities. I wrote the Books for Adolescent column for THE JOURNAL OF ADOLESCENT AND ADULT LTIERACY for 5 years. I wrote the Book Review column for VOICES FROM THE MIDDLE for 7 years. I write the Portrait column (interviews with authors for children and young adults) for TEACHER LIBRARIAN for 10 years. I am the current AudioTalk columnist for VOICE OF YOUTH ADVOCATES, specializing in audio for YA readers. I have presented at the following conferences: American Library Association, International Association of Scholl Librarians, National Council of Teachers of English, International Reading Assoication, and their state and local counterparts.
